Have we as society lost our physical touch with reality.

Go on a train, a tram, a bus, a walk, a run, a plane, a taxi… what do you see?

I see the age of technology.

In 2014 I watched a video by Gary Turk – and it spoke volumes to me. An important lesson I took out of it is what society has become. The world of mobile marketing and smart phones have made humans less mobile and antisocial. The ‘Power of now’ with access to all the answers instantly has changed our perception on research and how we interact and the importance of digital marketing due to the range of people accessing online is increasing by the day.

If a google search does not load instantly, or within a few seconds – due to data problems or poor wifi – do you care or do you become more agitated and angry?

This is the concept of the impatient and demanding consumer. We as consumers, expect all information with lightning speed and a specific tailored search to the individual and if we don’t… we become angry, angry at the world around us, angry at the people we love.

An Apple feature called ‘Screen Time’ now (if enabled) records your time on the screen, and as we look around our common social areas mentioned in the first line, do you see a higher percentage of communication – or a stranger indulged in their mobile life? In Australia, Children between 4-5 average 2 hours screen time a day, and it only increases with age.

We have lost our social nature and values… and with that goes our reality on the real world. That is mobile marketing at its most powerful. How long do you spend on your phone daily?

  1. just checked my screen time, on average I spend about 5-6 hours. Super guilty of doing all of the above!
It is a shame people are looking at their phones more than spending time with each other these days.

    1. Thankyou for sharing Tan. It is one of my biggest regrets over the past 5 years just the amount of time spent on my phone. I hate seeing people on trains and trams looking down and not looking up

  2. I am also guilty of spending way too much time online everyday! Constant notifications, messages and an information overload make it so easy to spend more time online. We should put down our mobile phones once in a while and just enjoy the moment. Great post.
